Building the Shred PileAs the pile of green waste builds up it gets watered. Watering the material helps accelerate the composting process.
Completed Beginning BayDepending on the season and volume of material it takes approximately 3 to 4 weeks to completely fill a Beginning bay. Once a Beginning bay in one row has been filled the crew moves on to the next Beginning bay.
Compost "Not Ready" SignThis sign means none of the Ready compost bays is open.
Compost AvailableWhen the "No" is removed a Ready bay is open for business.
Compost BaysEach row of bays has a Beginning Bay (far right-hand side), two Intermediate Bays and a Ready Bay (left-hand side of the picture).
Compost BaysThe compost area consists of 3 rows with 4 compost bays in each row.

Compost Ready for UseThe compost is available when the wall of the Ready bay has been removed.
Compost TemperatureIt is important that the compost temperature heats up to between 140°-160° Fahrenheit in order to kill weed seeds and pathogenic organisms.
Composting Crew - Saturdays - 9:00 a.m.Volunteers meet every Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. in the lower composting area to build compost. All garden members are welcome to participate. Sturdy shoes and gloves are recommended.
Covered Compost BaysCompost bays are kept covered to keep the moisture from evaporating. It also helps elevate the temperature of the material which accelerates the composting process.
